Talking Top Gun with Wilcox Wellness and Fitness
It’s Friday, so it must be another segment of Talking Top Gun, a blog series where I interview entrepreneurs in the Top Gun Entrepreneurship Accelerator! This week I chatted with married duo Paige and Mike Wilcox of Wilcox Wellness and Fitness, a personal training facility in Bangor.
As a slight couch potato and someone who only likes to exercise outside, at first I didn’t understand the benefits of becoming a client at Wilcox. I was skeptical and asking myself, “How is this any different from every other gym that I’ve been to?” Then Paige explained to me how they overcome one of the biggest obstacles that people, myself included, face when they walk into a gym. A large number of gym-goers don’t know what to do when they arrive at the facility, so Wilcox takes out the guess work by only offering private or group sessions with trainers. For 30 minutes, three times a week, you don’t have to think about what you’re doing, and for busy professionals that is a huge benefit. Paige likes to tell clients, “All you have to do is get through the door, and the trainers take care of everything else.”
What are the advantages of growing your business in the Bangor area?
Paige: I think Bangor has a lot to offer small businesses. Bangor is in a period of rapid growth right now, so all businesses can take advantage of that. We also have such a supportive community here; businesses are supporting each other, people are supporting each other, and everyone is interested in helping Bangor grow.
What’s your value proposition compared to other fitness facilities in the area?
Paige: We’re a private personal training facility. We offer two programs: private training and group training. Every time you come to our facility you’re working with a trainer, and the trainer takes care of everything for you. We understand that everyone’s time is so valuable, and with our training program we can help people get great results in just three 30 minute sessions per week. So, our program is really efficient; it gets you in, gets you out, gets you on with your life. It’s also very schedule friendly; we have over 60 sessions to choose from in our group training program per week, with sessions starting at 5:30 A.M. and running throughout the day.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs? Paige: For aspiring entrepreneurs, I’d say, “Go for it!” Follow your dreams, and do what makes you happy. I think it will be the best decision you ever make.
What was your inspiration for starting Wilcox Wellness and Fitness?
Mike: I started personal training people about twelve years ago and have always had a passion for helping others, mostly through health and wellness. I got to a point in the business where I either needed to start a business of my own or find another career path. Luckily I have a wife who has an entrepreneurial spirit and comes from a long family history of small businesses, so we put our heads together and did a lot of research. We figured out that we could make a bigger impact in the community and create a family business that was stable and profitable.
